C-SC soccer teams open season with pair of victories

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Culver-Stockton College women’s soccer team’s offense got off to a fast start.

Senior forward Kirstin Jannin scored five minutes into Sunday’s season opener against Avila at the Zarda Sports Complex and freshman Alayna Chandler-Gutierrez scored 25 seconds later, propelling the Wildcats to a 4-1 victory.

Rachel Iacobellis scored C-SC’s third goal in the 22nd minute, taking a pass from McKenna Little and getting behind the defense. Jannin scored her second goal after Avila failed to clear a ball out of the box as the Wildcats built a 4-0 halftime lead.

Mackenzie Frizzell played the first 82 minutes in goal for C-SC, allowing one goal and making four saves.

The Wildcats (1-0) face Missouri Baptist at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. Louis.

C-SC men put victory away in second half

CLAYTON, Mo. — Culver-Stockton College men’s soccer coach Nic Powers won his debut as the Wildcats scored three second-half goals and earned a 4-0 victory over Fontbonne on Sunday night in the season opener at Gay Field.

Ruben Reinertsen scored in the 30th minute off an Austin Jones assist to give C-SC a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, CJ Joyner, Ethan Wilkinson-Felgate and Manuel Gavina scored with Joyner and Matias Maderia providing assists.

The Wildcats outshot the Griffins 11-5 and held a 10-5 advantage on corner kicks.

C-SC (1-0) will have its home opener at 7 p.m. Saturday against Hannibal-LaGrange at Ellison Poulton Stadium.
