Culver-Stockton pitchers team up for four-hitter as Gems move into second-place tie

PERU, Ill. — A pair of Culver-Stockton College pitchers teamed up to pitch a four-hitter on Saturday night in the Quincy Gems’ 6-2 victory over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp in a Prospect League game at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Gems (7-8 second half, 26-21 overall) are tied for second place with Burlington in the Great River Division, 2 ½ games behind Normal.

Daniel Hargrave, who had been used primarily in relief this season, pitched the first six innings, allowing three hits and one run while walking four. His earned run average in 13 innings over his last three appearances is 2.07.

Stefan Stockwell earned the save, allowing one hit and one unearned run in three innings while walking three.

The Gems trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning with Jaison Andujar singled to lead off. Bennett Eltoft walked, and both Gems moved up a base on a passed ball. Jayden Shafer then singled to center to score both base runners.

After the Pistol Shrimp brought in Nick Laxner in relief of starting pitcher Jason Shanner, Hayden Moore walked. Moore and Shafer advanced a base on a passed ball, and Dayson Croes singled to right to score both baserunners. 

Andujar had an RBI single in the eighth innings, and Moore scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning.

Andujar, who had gone hitless in his first 16 at-bats since joining the team July 15, had three hits for Quincy. Croes, who had two hits, has a six-game hitting streak and is batting .391 with seven runs batted in since joining the team July 18. Shafer also had two hits.
